The Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF), through the EU-funded Disability Rights Advocacy Project for Inclusive Development (D-RAPID), has successfully concluded the distribution of assistive devices to persons with disabilities across Ushongo and Okpokwu Local Government Areas, with the grand finale for Tarka LGA planned for 31st August 2026, in Benue State.
For many beneficiaries, the distribution was far more than the provision of wheelchairs, crutches, walking aids and other assistive devices. It was an experience of dignity, recognition, inclusion and renewed independence. For years, many had faced significant mobility barriers affecting their access to farms, markets, livelihoods, education and community activities, barriers that, for some, deepened isolation, reduced economic opportunity, and heightened vulnerability to poverty.
WHAT WAS DISTRIBUTED
As part of D-RAPID’s commitment to promoting independence, dignity and inclusion, a total of 57 assistive devices were distributed to beneficiaries across Ushongo, Okpokwu and Tarka LGAs, addressing beneficiaries’ varied mobility and functional needs and enabling fuller participation in livelihood, social and community life.
What Was Distributed?
As part of the D-RAPID Project’s commitment to promoting independence, dignity, and inclusion among persons with disabilities, a total of 57 assistive devices were distributed to beneficiaries across Ushongo, Okpokwu, and Tarka Local Government Areas of Benue State. The support included 18 wheelchairs, 3 artificial limbs, 8 walking canes, 16 pairs of crutches, 1 arm crutch, 2 white canes, 1 tricycle, and 50 sunscreens and 4 glasses. These devices were provided to address beneficiaries’ different mobility and functional needs, enabling them to move more independently and improve their participation in livelihood, social, and community activities.
DIGNITY AT THE CENTRE
The D-RAPID team placed particular emphasis on ensuring beneficiaries were treated with dignity, respect and personal attention not simply counted as recipients. This approach created an atmosphere in which many participants felt valued and genuinely included, returning to their livelihoods, reconnecting with their communities, and regaining confidence and self-worth. The beneficiaries had this to say,
“I felt remembered.”
“I felt seen.”
“I felt human again.”
Together, we are breaking barriers. Together, we are building an inclusive Benue where no one is left behind.
